How to Find & Decode Your HVAC Serial Number to Determine Age & Warranty Status.
Your HVAC serial number is the fastest way to know how old your system is and whether it's still under warranty. Here's how to find it and decode it for Goodman, Trane, and Carrier units across the Triangle.
The short version
The nameplate on your outdoor condenser or indoor furnace/air handler contains a serial number that encodes the manufacture date. For most brands, the first two to four digits are all you need.
Knowing your system's age helps you decide whether to repair or replace, check warranty coverage before calling for service, and avoid surprises when a technician opens the panel.
If your system is 10–15 years old, replacement is usually more economical than major repairs.
Every HVAC unit made after the mid-1990s carries a metal nameplate with model and serial numbers. That sticker is your system's birth certificate. Once you know how to read it, you can determine the unit's age in under 60 seconds, and use that information to make smarter decisions about maintenance, repairs, and replacement timing.
In the Raleigh-Durham area, we see a lot of homes with mismatched equipment ages: a 3-year-old condenser paired with a 17-year-old furnace, or vice versa. Where to Find the Serial Number
Brand 01
Goodman & Amana Serial Numbers
Goodman and Amana (same parent company) use one of the most straightforward formats in the industry.
Warranty note: Goodman offers a 10-year parts warranty on most registered residential systems. If your unit is under 10 years old and was registered by the original installer, parts may still be covered. Labor is typically not included after the first year.

Trane & American Standard Serial Numbers
Trane uses a slightly more complex system that changed formats over the years. Most Trane units in Raleigh-Durham fall into one of two eras.
Warranty note: Trane's registered residential systems carry a 10-year parts warranty and a 20-year or lifetime warranty on select heat exchangers. Unregistered systems drop to 5-year parts coverage. Always check registration status before authorizing major repairs.

Carrier, Bryant & Payne Serial Numbers
Carrier and its sister brands (Bryant, Payne, Day & Night) have used a few different formats. The most common in the Triangle is the 4-digit date prefix.
Warranty note: Carrier offers a 10-year parts warranty on most registered systems, with some high-efficiency models carrying longer compressor warranties. Labor coverage is typically 1–2 years through the installing dealer.

How Age Affects Your Warranty & Repair Decisions
Once you know your system's age, you can make smarter decisions about whether to repair or replace, and whether to pay for a warranty investigation before authorizing work.
Under 5 years: Almost always repair. Even major components are likely covered under parts warranty, and the system should have significant remaining life if it was installed correctly.
5–10 years: Evaluate on a case-by-case basis. A failed compressor or heat exchanger on a 7-year-old system is worth fixing if the rest of the unit is clean and well-maintained. A refrigerant leak on an 8-year-old R-22 system is usually not, replacement refrigerant is expensive and being phased out.
10–15 years: Start budgeting for replacement. Repairs are still possible, but each major fix extends the life by a smaller margin. If you're facing a $1,500+ repair on a 12-year-old unit, replacement is often the better investment.
Over 15 years: Replace unless the repair is minor (capacitor, contactor, fan motor). At this age, efficiency standards have changed twice, and a new system will typically cut your heating and cooling costs by 20–40%.
